Traceloops- Matthias Brown

I have followed this tumblr for quite a long time, I think his work is pretty important in terms of establishing GIFs as a form of art. His short looped animations are brilliant at capturing a likeness and a vividness which make them very captivating to watch. I particularly like the idea of cutting out a traditional painting and inserting an animation of the baby blinking. It creates a really interesting antithesis between old and new and realistic and inanimate. Is the painting more realistic due to its detail and faithfulness to the subject or is the animation more realistic capturing the living squiggling chubby baby, even if it does this with minimal lines. I think its interesting that he has chosen to cut out a square and not tried to animate the whole face, I think this might be him trying to create a window to the past. I think it is a beautiful idea, bringing this bubbling baby back to life.

"here is the deepest secret nobody knows

(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)"
- e e cummings

This piece is even more pertinent to my project as it was inspired by E.E Cummings. I think this is one of the beauties of animation, that you can visualise metaphors and impossibilities with the flash of a pen. This looped GIF is gorgeous, how the fingers grow into the veins and then are enclosed again within the hands. I think it really visualises that feeling of complete trust and connection, how the person who holds the heart now becomes part the person through their love.

Take a look at some of his other work:
